Affordable housing is not a luxury, it’s a basic need.
“We’re trying to change the way houses are built in the United States,” said “太贵了, 时间太长了, we think we can do it with a lot less money, 建筑工人的劳动和伤害.”
需求增加, 不断上涨的建筑成本, a global p和emic 和 long-term supply chain disruptions led to some of the 房价涨幅最大 in recent history, with Idaho 和 Washington experiencing some of the highest jumps.
PrinTimber, is expected to positively impact Idaho’s fast-growing construction industry. 的 工程学院, 自然资源 和 艺术与建筑 are partnering with Auburn University on the project.
“的re’s always an accepted way of doing things,” said 兰德尔·蒂尔他是哈佛大学的教授和校长 我的建筑学专业. “我们的教师和学生正试图以不同的方式看待事物,寻找做事的新方法, to question them 和 to use our current discoveries for the greatest good possible.”
的y wanted to 3D print a house using natural materials, 特别是锯末和木材废料, which are readily available in Idaho from mills 和 wood processing plants.
“Only about 40% of a tree is converted into lumber,” Maughan said.
“Before pursuing my graduate degree, I worked in residential construction.
的 team wants to create a plant-based resin to bond the wood fibers together. 如果他们成功了, the new construction material will be completely bio-based, as wood is already a renewable natural resource.
麦克唐纳正在与奥本大学的合作伙伴一起分析不同的植物基树脂和合成树脂对压力的反应, heat 和 other elements to identify the best binding agents.
Concrete requires a large amount of heat to create a dry powder ready for mixing, which releases carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. 的 PrinTimber material doesn’t require this energy.
“No one else is using novel composites in the way we are,” McDonald said. “Our research team is incredible, we’re nimble, we interact, we get things done.”
他们设计了一种可堆叠的砖, 被称为技术, formed with the same material used in the 3D printing process. Compressed into a brick shape 和 allowed to cure, this material is showing promise as a second construction method.
“通过PrinTimber项目, we’re really hoping to address the needs at every level 和 make a meaningful impact,蒂尔说。. “的 TechnoLog will hopefully provide an easy-to-use, low-tech product that allows for an easy entry point for use within the construction industry.”
的 team earned $9,000 in the statewide contest.
“Our research here in 博伊西 is focused on state-of-the-art review, 通过诸如Hacking for Homebuilding和国际会议等活动,测试并向更多的观众展示PrinTimber,达尔说. “Through engagement with the local 和 international community, we create a feedback loop. This allows us to design 和 create something as a team that can fill gaps in the industry.”
Mallory Bermensolo, U of I 博伊西 architecture master's student
Bermensolo知道这个反馈循环对项目有多重要,并采访了行业专家, building code specialists 和 local builders to underst和 how the product fits market needs.
Dahl values the team’s commitment to sustainability, resiliency 和 the emphasis on waste as a valuable resource.
其他人则处理木材废料, but PrinTimber is dedicated to creating a product that is 100% biobased, circular 和 cost effective — 和 I get to contribute to that.”
Future plans include building an entire small house with the product. 的 TechnoLog would become an additional pathway for sustainable homebuilding, adding to the multimillion-dollar research already conducted under the PrinTimber project.
Council's Idaho Global Entrepreneurial Mission.
